DEATH OF LOUIS CAMILLE

OBITUARIES & PRAISES

Please excuse us for the bad quality of this automatic translation which is being corrected for better comprehension

Louis Camille lives in Algiers and sign with the Faculty of Medicine. Called in Paris to take part in a jury of aggregation, it dies abruptly on May 12, 1936. (Undoubtedly of the continuations of its experimental intoxication). Its body is transferred to Pont with Monsoon where it is buried. The local press will largely make echo of this death, recalling that the scientific observations of Louis Camille Maillard make authority in the whole world.

Its granite vault, in edge of the central alley, is of a great sobriety. A plate indicates its title of Professor, Correspondant of the Academy of Medicine and Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. The Faculty of Medicine of Algiers deposited on its tomb a branch of bronze bay-tree thus marking its attachment with this friend too early missing.

The headings obituary most flattering come encenser this character out of the commun run. Let us quote here:

               C.ACHARD, Company of biology

A. GORIS, Academy of Medicine

E.LEBLANC & J.ETTORI, Medical Press

A.GIBERTON, Medical Algeria.

Under this heading, Mr Giberton also speaks about the extraordinary praise pronounced by the Senior Paul CHAUVEAU at the time of the meeting of re-entry of the University in 1936. I, alas, did not find this text.

Curiously, none of these headings, even regional, speaks about its family (parents, child, united or brother). However we find trace of Henri in the books of payment of the concessions of the cemetery. It domiciled to the 343, German Saint boulevard in Paris in date of 1934.

At the local level, not having more direct relationship on the town of Bridge with Monsoon, family MAILLARD falls into the lapse of memory.

Mr. professor MAILLARD, old aggregate of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, is deceased on May 12, 1936 in Paris, where it had had to sit in membership of the jury of the one of the contests of aggregation.

Born on February 4, 1878 with Bridge-with-Monsoon, Mr. MAILLARD had been successively assistant and chief of practical work of chemistry to the Faculty of Medicine of Nancy; he came to Paris in 1902, where he was named chief of work of the biological chemistry laboratory. Higher pharmacist, doctor of medicine (1903) with a thesis entitled:

Research on urinary indoxyle and the colors which derive from it; science doctor (1913) with a thesis onthe Action of glycerin and sugars on the alpha-amino acids, it was appointed professor incorporated in 1904.

Chief of work practise chemistry with Faculty on August 14, 1912, it was indicated the 1er July 1919 to occupy pulpit of the biological and Toxicological Chemistry to the Pharmacy and Faculty of Medicine of Algiers. During the war, it directed various laboratories where it studied the questions of food hygiene, hydrology and toxicology.

It was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1916. Its name remains attached to a urinary coefficient or index of ureogenic imperfection, indicating the deficit of the urea formation in the organization at the expense of the nitrogenized bodies. It was since 1919, corresponding national of the Academy of Medicine.

Obituary on Mr Louis MAILLARD

(1878-1936)

By M. A. Goris

M. Louis MAILLARD, born in 1878, doctor of medicine, science doctor, higher pharmacist, was a professor with the Faculty of Medicine of Algiers.

Former pupil of the Faculty of Nancy of 1897 to 1901, where he was successively Assistant and Chief of practical Work of Chemistry, M. L MAILLARD came to Paris in 1902 and was named chief of work of the biological Chemistry laboratory, under the direction of A. Gautier. Incorporated in 1914, it was charged, on several occasions, of  the Conferences of Biological Chemistry.

It was named, in 1919, professor of biological and medical chemistry to the Faculty of Algiers, and, the same year, corresponding national of the Academy of Medicine in the section of pharmacy.

During the war, in charge of the direction of various laboratories, it was devoted to the study of the questions relating to the food hygiene, hydrology, the toxicology which fell on to him. It was named chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1916.

M. MAILLARD made many publications having milked with inorganic, agricultural and analytical chemistry, but more particularly with the organic chemistry and biological.

It made known a synthesis of polypeptides by a simple method connecting the amino acids by transitory glyceric etherification. Heated within glycerin, these amino-acids join, either in dipeptides cyclic (the cycloones) of Maillard, or out of linear polypeptides. Already Fischer had obtained similar in vitro compounds ; the interest of research of Maillard consists of the simplicity of the reaction suggested by him. It makes it possible, in addition, to consider the natural mechanism of the proteinic assimilation in the alive beings and to show the need for greases for the food use of albuminoids.

The discovery of the production at will of the two dyes, indirubin (red) indigotin (blue) is often indicated under the name of "phenomenon of Maillard ". It acts of a polymerization of a third dye the hémi-indigotin which is done according to the reaction of the medium, sometimes in one or the other of the two dyes. This work put an end to the nomenclature of all the urinary pigments deriving from potassium indigo-sulphonate.

Its name also sticks to a " urinary coefficient " or " index of ureogenic imperfection ", indicating the deficit of the urea formation in the organization at the expense of the nitrogenized bodies. This coefficient is the report/ratio of total nitrogen with nitrogen coming from the amino acids and ammoniacal salts which are not transformed into urea. This coefficient, by approximately 6,5 at the normal man, decreases in the vegetarians and increases with the flesh-colored mode.

In biological chemistry, one can still quote his research on the crystallization of proteins and particularly of fibrin. It also showed the role of electrolytic dissociation in the biological, toxicological and therapeutic action of rock salt.

In agricultural chemistry, Maillard outlined a theory on the natural mechanism of the formation of the humus and mineral fuels.

Its work of analytical chemistry milked with the proportioning of arsenic, vanadium and, few days before its death which has occurred abruptly in Paris, - where it had come like judges with the contest of aggregation, - it had presented a work on the presence and the proportioning of titanium in the organization.

The Faculty of Algiers loses in L.Maillard an estimated professor and a scientist showing a great originality in its research.    (unanimous Approval).        Top of the page

Paul CHAUVEAU, Senior of the Faculty of Law of Algiers[ 1 ]

from 1934 to 1943

Paul CHAUVEAU was born in Rennes on October 16, 1898 (he is the 20 year old junior of LC). He makes his secondary studies with the college of Rennes but completes them with the college Janson de Sailly in Paris. It carries out its studies higher at the same time than the Faculty of Law of Rennes and that of Paris where he becomes Doctor in Right. The 1era World war stops its studies then. October 16, 1916 (birthday day of its 18 years) it voluntarily engages in the navy for the duration of the war. It will be demobilized only on October 20, 1919. It resumes its studies then. It is named part-time lecturer to the Faculty of Law of Alger(c' is at this time that it makes the knowledge of Mr. MAILLARD) as from the 1er January 1925. It passes the aggregation of private law in 1926 and is affected on the spot in Algiers where it will be established in 1929.

The second world war occurs then. Paul CHAUVEAU is recalled in the navy the 1/9/1939. He is a second-Master fourrier. November 24, 1939, it is promoted with the rank of assistant officer of maritime justice. January 26, 1940, he will be a police chief of 1era classifies auxiliary. He is demobilized on September 2, 1940.

He takes again his courses with the Faculty of Law of Algiers, from which he had become Doyen in 1934. But in 1942, it voluntarily engages for the duration of the war. It turns over in the navy and is useful under the orders of the admiral Lemonier. It is then promoted with the rank of Police chief auxiliary the 1er April 1943, affected with the marine Corsican in September of the same year, and placed at the disposal of the police chief of justice, invested functions of Attorney General in Bastia at the time of the release of Corsica. In March 1944, it is affected to the general Staff of the war under the orders of the Béthouard General in the capacity as head of department of the administrative connection. It leaves to London in June 1944 and is named administrative liaison officer by decision of the higher commander of the French forces in Great Britain.

It is unloaded in Normandy on June 20, 1944 and takes part in the Normandy campaign with the 1American armed era, as a liaison officer. At the time of the Release of Paris, it is assimilated to the rank of Police chief as a chief, and is named within the framework of the special equivalents to the service of military justice. It is then named with the permanent military tribunal of Paris on 25 November 1944et in charge of the research of the enemy war crimes.

It will be demobilized the 1er October 1945. But, placed at the disposal of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, it is detached with the service of the German businesses and is sent in Berlin from October 1945 at October 1947. It is only in October 1947 that it will return to Algiers and will take again its functions of professor to the Faculty of Law of Algiers. It will preserve them until the independence of Algeria. After the agreements of Evian in 1962, it leaves this country definitively and arrives to Bordeaux in July 1962. It will finish its career with the Faculty of Law of Bordeaux where it will remain during 6 years, until its retirement on October 16, 1968 (it is 70 years old). In spite of these activities, Senior CHAUVEAU published treaties of maritime law and air law. He is member of the French Association of maritime law and air law, and member of the international maritime Committee, as well as International Law Association.

Paul CHAUVEAU had been decorated with the Cross of the Legion of Honor by decree of the 21.12.1951, but he was also Officier of the Academic Palms and large officer of Nichan Iftikar.

Curious similarities between Louis Camille MAILLARD & Paul CHAUVEAU: both studies doubles (province and Paris), both doctors, both volunteer for the duration from the war, demobilized in 1919, both at disposal of the Minister, both are titular legion of honor, both are professors with the Faculty of Algiers, both publish regularly and take part in numbers of companies. These two exiled were to be the best friends of the world. It is him which will pronounce a remarkable praise of Louis Camille at the time of the meeting of re-entry in 1936. I alas did not succeed in finding this text. (see towards Bordeaux)        Top of the page
