In 1919, Louis Camille MAILLARD is registered in May candidate with the Pulpit of the 102nd section (Physical & medical Chimie). Registered into 42nd line, it withdraws its candidature and on the 4 the 2nd division( Phys defersit. Chim. méd. & Pharmacie) It is elected into 22nd line in front of famous Auguste LIGHT, 16 years its elder. Here thus Louis Camille MAILLARD titular of Pulpit of the biological and toxicological Chemistry to the Faculty of Medicine of Algiers. It is also corresponding national of the Academy of medicine, physical section and medical chemistry.
We still find some publications on drinking waters, arsenic, the acid acetylacetic as well as a communication with MURLAY on cacodyl. Prices JECKER and BERTHELOT to him are allotted this year there. The death of its Master A. GAUTIER and his departure for Algeria disturbs certainly it. The disappearance of his/her father, in April 1920, does not arrange anything.
We have only few information over its Algerian period however long (17 years). It lives in Algiers with the n° 9 of the street Fomel. Perhaps do his/her colleagues speak about his lassitude, due to its accidental intoxication? We really do not know. It ceases its publications and is devoted exclusively to teaching. It is little for this so fertile character usually. Paradox, this absence of information informs us.
In 1920, Algiers is in full effervescence. The scientific and medical life there is very animated the war left indelible traces. The deficiencies of all kinds and their consequences come to be added to the amputations and with the most various wounds, the tropical diseases are quite real and the epidemics are latent. All is to be rebuilt. The school became Université and, under the responsibility for Senior CURTILLET, it reorganizes.
In 1922, forty professors, doctors and surgeons of Faculty and Hospitals, colleagues of Louis Camille melt a new review: Newspaper of Medicine and Surgery of North Africa (which will become Medical Algérie in 1927). Not trace of Louis Camille. The thorough reading of this active newspaper questions us because it publishes articles on subjects which impassion our Doctor: "treatment of syphilis to arsenic", "arsenic in the water of the Mount Gilds", subjects that Louis Camille controls perfectly (1919); Call of doctors for the Commission of the prices, not of so fond of delicacies Maillard, him however of this form of glory.
The handing-over of Legion of Honor (however it claims it) and of Medals of the Epidemics, the application of the decree Beylical (antityphoïdic vaccination), nothing makes leave Mr MAILLARD his retirement. It keeps away from the life in Company. At that time, some scientists and doctors * melt the Medical Company of Algiers, and launch a call probably with him intended: Seek a correspondent doctor biologist pharmacist residing in Algiers, they do not have to be hundreds in this case, no reaction (of Maillard) of course!
This voluntary retreat has one or more causes inevitably. Does the tiredness of the war, the continuations of its wounds, the exile, the deaths of its Master, of his father, the absence of his son, (meet it at the time of its passages in France? ?)... Autant of sufficient or worse reasons corresponds the ones than the others. It is according to.

To be elected with the Academy is much more than one honor. It is a recognition by its pars of the exceptional quality of the man and the scientist. The being in front of a genius as famous as Auguste LIGHT, his elder 16 years, shows us, if need be, the extremely rare value of Louis Camille MAILLARD.
